A consonant alone writes the pulli (k → க்); add a vowel key for the uyirmei (ka → க, kaa → கா). Uppercase N, R, L, S give ண, ற, ள, ஸ.

How phonetic Tamil typing works
Phonetic transliteration is the fastest way to type Tamil on any keyboard, because you type the sound you hear instead of hunting for a Tamil layout. Every English letter or letter-pair maps to a Tamil character: k → க், th → த், aa → ஆ. Type "kathir" and the tool assembles க + த் + இ + ர் from the individual keys.
The scheme is complete where it matters most. All 12 vowels, 18 consonants, all 216 uyirmei (ka → க, kaa → கா, ki → கி …), the 5 grantha letters (ஜ, ஷ, ஸ, ஹ, க்ஷ) and the aytham (ஃ) are covered by construction — every Tamil syllable is reachable with English keys.
A consonant alone writes the pulli, exactly as in the Azhagi scheme: k is க், not க. Add a vowel key for the uyirmei: ka → க, kaa → கா, ki → கி, ke → கெ. The pulli (க்) is never guessed — it is what a bare consonant key means.
The key table is the proven Azhagi transliteration scheme from the open-source open-tamil library — no invented shortcuts and no word lists. Everything is honest letter-level transliteration: the tool writes what you type, sound by sound. Tamil script rules like sandhi (எங்கள், வணக்கம்) are not guessed.
Because this is letter-level transliteration and not machine translation, the output is always predictable — you stay in control of every character. Translators that 'know' grammar (like Google's) apply sandhi rules automatically; here the trade-off is transparency: what you type is what you get, and up to 5,000 characters convert instantly on your device.
