Why Tamil font conversion still matters
Legacy Tamil fonts like Bamini, TSC, TAB, TAM, Anjal and Shree-lip map Tamil characters to Latin keystrokes — 'h' is க, 'hp' is ரி. They were built in the 1990s and 2000s so Tamil could be typed on keyboards that had no Tamil layout. Millions of old documents, newspaper archives, government forms and school records still sit in these encodings.
Modern devices, websites and editors expect Unicode. A document typed in Bamini shows up as gibberish on a phone, a browser or YouTube. Converting it to Unicode fixes that permanently: the text becomes standard Tamil that any device can read, search and edit.

Tables are audited against open sources and validated for round-trip consistency. A few quirks are inherent to the legacy encodings — not converter bugs.
Missing clusters pass through
Rare combinations with no legacy key (like ஙு or ஞு in Bamini) stay unchanged in Unicode → legacy mode instead of being corrupted.
Digits stay ASCII
Legacy fonts encode digits as ASCII, so 0–9 pass through unchanged in both directions.
Bamini ரி ambiguity
Bamini encodes ரி as 'hp'. After certain letters like ச this reads back as a different syllable — a property of the font, documented on the Bamini pages.
