How the dictionary is built
This is a curated core vocabulary, not an exhaustive lexicon. Every one of the 2,130 headwords is hand-picked and cross-checked against standard references (the public-domain University of Madras Tamil Lexicon, learner-vocabulary conventions, and how Tamil creators actually write today). Glosses are the project's own wording — nothing is scraped from a copyrighted corpus.
Search is transliteration-first. Because the app already ships the proven open-tamil Azhagi scheme (the same one used by the Tamil Typing Tool), a romanized query like kadal is converted to கடல் before matching — so you don't need a Tamil keyboard to find Tamil words. English exact matches rank first, then Tamil matches, then prefix and substring matches.
Homographs are listed honestly: one Tamil word with several senses appears as separate entries (ஆறு is both six and river, வெள்ளி is both Friday and silver), exactly as in a printed dictionary.
The dataset is open: a UTF-8 CSV export of every headword (english, tamil, part of speech, category, examples) is downloadable and citable — no sign-up, no paywall. Gaps are admitted: words outside the curated core show an honest 'not found' state rather than a fabricated guess.
