About TAB
TAB is a legacy Tamil keyboard layout and font used widely in Tamil Nadu government offices and businesses in the 1990s and 2000s. Its keystroke mapping differs from Bamini, which is why text from one font shows as gibberish in the other.
TAB text appears as Latin characters on any device without the TAB font. Converting TAB to Unicode turns those documents back into readable, searchable Tamil.
Like other legacy fonts, TAB encodes digits as ASCII and lacks the anusvara. The rare ௬ (six) glyph is unreachable in the source mapping and passes through unchanged.
Edge cases
- Digits are ASCII: 0–9 pass through in both directions.
- Anusvara: ஂ has no TAB key and stays unchanged.
- The ௬ glyph has no reachable TAB key and appears unchanged if present.
