About Bamini
Bamini is the most widely used legacy Tamil font in Tamil Nadu. It maps Tamil letters to Latin keys on a standard keyboard — க is 'k', ச is 'r', ரி is 'hp' — so documents can be typed without a Tamil layout.
Because Bamini predates widespread Unicode support, a lot of real work still lives in Bamini text: certificates, panchayat records, wedding invitations, school materials and old news copy. Converting it to Unicode makes that text usable on any device, searchable in Google and editable in any app.
Bamini has a few quirks. Some Unicode characters like ஙு and ஞு have no Bamini key and pass through unchanged. And the ரி combination ('hp') can be ambiguous after a preceding ச, so a word like சரி round-trips to a related but different syllable. These are properties of the font, not conversion errors.
Edge cases
- ரி after ச: Bamini encodes ரி as 'hp'; after a preceding ச this can read back as a different syllable — inherent to the encoding.
- Missing clusters: ஙு, ஙூ, ஞு, ஞூ, க்ஷ and the anusvara have no Bamini key and pass through unchanged.
- Digits: Bamini uses ASCII digits, so 0–9 stay as-is in both directions.
